Water Prices Surge in Tamil Nadu Amid Rising Raw Material Costs

Chennai, March 24: The ongoing conflict in the oil-rich regions of West Asia is beginning to impact households in Tamil Nadu. Following a rise in the prices of petroleum-based raw materials, the cost of producing bottled water and 20-liter cans has increased, leading to higher prices for bottled water.

Initially, this crisis affected the state’s hotel and hospitality sector, but it is now directly impacting those who rely on 20-liter cans for their daily water needs.

Sources indicate that the price of polyethylene terephthalate, used in the production of bottles and cans, has risen significantly. As a result, the cost of new 20-liter cans has surged.

Manufacturers have raised the price of 20-liter cans by approximately 5 rupees, while some major brands have increased it by up to 10 rupees. The price of bottled water has also escalated, with a can now costing 20 to 30 rupees more than before.

In Tamil Nadu, around 1,500 packaged water units supply water through 20-liter cans to approximately 1.5 million people. However, there are very few manufacturers of plastic containers in the state, leading to supply shortages and production challenges.

Each unit requires new containers weekly, so any disruption in raw materials directly affects water prices.

Retailers in Chennai and other cities are already passing on the increased costs to customers. A 20-liter can, which previously cost around 20 rupees, is now selling for 25 rupees in many places. Prices may rise further in the coming days.

Households in urban areas are experiencing higher water expenses, along with increased delivery charges. Industry experts warn that if petrol or diesel prices rise, transportation costs will increase, further driving up water prices.
