New Delhi, August 11: The Indian cricket team is currently in Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series. The first Test is set to begin on August 15, followed by the second Test in Colombo on August 23. Historically, the India-Sri Lanka series has showcased a dominance of batters. Notably, Virat Kohli holds the record for the most runs scored in a single Test series between these two teams.
In the 2017-18 series held in India, Kohli amassed 610 runs in five innings against Sri Lanka, including three centuries and one half-century. His batting average during that series was an impressive 152.50, with a highest score of 243 runs. This achievement remains the highest run tally in any Test series between India and Sri Lanka.
Following Kohli, former Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya ranks second for the most runs in a Test series against India. In 1997, during a two-match series in Sri Lanka, Jayasuriya scored 571 runs in three innings, featuring two centuries. His average was an astounding 190.33, and he famously scored a triple century, with his highest score being 340 runs, which remains his best in Test cricket.
Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag occupies the third spot for the most runs in a Test series between India and Sri Lanka. In the 2009-10 series held in India, Sehwag scored 491 runs in four innings, including two centuries and one half-century, with an average of 122.75. He narrowly missed out on a triple century, with his highest score being 293 runs.
In the upcoming series, all eyes will be on India’s Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Yashasvi Jaiswal. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Udara, Kamindu Mendis, captain Dhananjaya de Silva, and Kusal Mendis are expected to pose a significant challenge to the Indian bowlers.
