Madrid, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : Javier Aguirre has stepped into the role of head coach for Valencia, a team currently facing significant challenges in La Liga. He stated his intention to move “one step at a time” as he takes on this demanding position.
The former coach of the Mexican national team has returned to Spain, where he has previously managed clubs like Atlético Madrid, Osasuna, Mallorca, and Levante. Aguirre now faces the task of lifting Valencia out of the relegation zone, as the team has only accumulated four points from their first seven matches this season.
Aguirre expressed his commitment to coaching such a historic club, stating he could never turn down the opportunity. He accepted the position immediately upon receiving the offer. When asked about the possibility of qualifying for the Europa League, which could extend his contract beyond June 2027, he emphasized his preference for focusing on immediate challenges rather than long-term plans.
He is currently concentrating on his first match against Racing Santander on October 11, while also noting that his contract is not his primary concern. “There have been times when I haven’t completed my contract, and times when I’ve stayed without one. If we feel comfortable, I will remain,” he said.
The 67-year-old Aguirre has signed a contract that runs until June 2027, with an option for an additional season. His appointment marks a return to Spanish football under the supervision of Valencia’s new sporting director, Braulio Vázquez. Aguirre replaces Carlos Corberán, who was dismissed following a 1-0 defeat to Sevilla. Oscar Sánchez, the reserve team coach, briefly took charge, leading the team to a midweek victory against Alavés, but they narrowly lost 3-2 to Real Sociedad in their recent home match. Aguirre will have the international break to work with his new squad before the upcoming match.
