Violence Erupts in Bangladesh Following Election Results, Multiple Injuries Reported

Dhaka, February 16: Violence has erupted across various regions of Bangladesh following the announcement of election results. At least nine people have been injured, and a house was set ablaze amid rising incidents of post-election violence in five districts.

On Saturday night, clashes occurred between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in the Lalpur sub-district of Natore, resulting in six injuries. According to Mohammad Mojibur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Lalpur Police Station, “At least six individuals were injured during the clash.”

Two suspects have been arrested, and a firearm was recovered from the scene. A case has also been filed in connection with the incident.

In a separate event, a BNP worker was injured in an alleged attack by members of Jamaat-e-Islami in the Sadar sub-district of Sherpur. The victim, 35-year-old Giasuddin Russell, was working as an election agent for the defeated BNP candidate, Sanzila Zebrin Priyanka, from Sherpur-1.

Additionally, in the Daghunbhuyan sub-district of Feni, BNP supporters reportedly attacked a Jamaat worker in the village of Dakshin Bhabanipur on Saturday. The victim, Nurul Absar Belal, was assaulted at his home and was initially taken to a local health complex before being transferred to Feni General Hospital.

Reports indicate that in Jamalpur district, a local journalist, Shamsul Huda Ratan, was injured during an alleged attack by a leader of the BNP’s youth wing, Jubo Dal, while covering post-election violence in the Diwanaganj sub-district. Speaking to The Daily Star, Ratan stated that he had gone to Mondol Bazaar to gather information on a violent incident when he was attacked by Faruk Ahmed, the senior joint convener of the Diwanaganj Municipal Unit of Jubo Dal.

“I am still unwell. I will file a complaint with the police,” he said.

In another incident on Saturday night, a gang reportedly set fire to the home of Jamaat supporter Shokor Akunji in the Mashiali village of the Fulbaria sub-district in Khulna. Shokor’s son, Abdur Razzak, mentioned, “We could not identify the attackers.”

The Human Rights Support Society (HRSS) in Dhaka reported on Sunday that between October 2025 and February 14, during the 13th National Parliamentary Election, at least 10 people were killed, and 2,503 were injured due to election-related violence. Additionally, 34 individuals sustained gunshot wounds, while over 500 homes, vehicles, businesses, election offices, and polling centers were vandalized, looted, or set on fire.
