Chennai, May 6: A significant shift has occurred in Tamil Nadu politics, as actor-turned-politician Vijay’s party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), has made a remarkable debut in the elections.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to voters who supported the NDA in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. He praised TVK’s performance and reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to the state’s development and the welfare of its people.
In response, TVK leader Vijay thanked the Prime Minister and emphasized that the welfare of the people is his top priority. He stated that he aims to rise above politics and focus on the development of Tamil Nadu, hoping for the central government’s cooperation in this endeavor.
In the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections, TVK secured victories in nearly 108 out of 234 assembly seats. With a majority requiring 118 seats, the party is currently about 10 seats short.
Vijay has won in two constituencies but will need to vacate one.
Political analysts suggest that TVK will need the support of at least 12 legislators to form a government, making the role of smaller parties and coalitions crucial.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and its allies also won seats in the elections, while Congress, left parties, and other regional parties made a limited but significant impact. Meanwhile, the AIADMK and BJP alliance also secured a few seats.
Now, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar may initiate the government formation process. He could invite TVK to prove its majority or give the opportunity to the second-largest party.
If no party can establish a majority, President’s Rule may be imposed in the state, potentially leading to new elections within six months.
