New Delhi, March 15: Actor-turned-politician and Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay Thalapathi appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Sunday for questioning related to the Karur stampede incident.
Vijay arrived at the CBI headquarters in New Delhi. This marks the third time he has been summoned by the CBI regarding the investigation into the Karur tragedy. He was previously questioned on January 12 and 19, where he provided initial statements about the circumstances surrounding the stampede.
According to officials, this latest round of questioning aims to clarify certain aspects of Vijay’s earlier statements. Sources indicate that Vijay had requested to be interrogated in Chennai or to postpone the date. However, the CBI rejected both requests, insisting that he appear at their headquarters in the national capital as per standard investigation procedures.
In addition to Vijay, his driver, who was allegedly present during the Karur event, has also been summoned for questioning on Sunday. Officials suggested that both individuals might be interrogated together to verify statements and align the events that occurred on the day of the incident.
Currently, the CBI is focused on gathering evidence and recording witness statements as part of its investigation. Officials have noted that the inquiry is still in the evidence-gathering phase, and the agency will prepare a charge sheet based on the findings and testimonies collected during the investigation. The scope of the inquiry is expected to expand in the coming days.
As part of efforts to explore the administrative and political circumstances surrounding the rally, the CBI has also summoned Karur MLA Senthil Kumar for questioning on Tuesday.
Amid the ongoing CBI investigation, Vijay’s political party, TVK, has launched a campaign called “Target Karur” aimed at strengthening its support base among the local population.
It is important to note that on September 27, 2025, a massive crowd gathered during Vijay’s election rally in Karur. As the crowd surged forward, the situation spiraled out of control, resulting in the tragic loss of 41 lives, including women and children.
