New Delhi, March 18: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Tuesday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 89 seats in the upcoming assembly elections, while its allies will receive a total of 37 seats.
According to the seat-sharing arrangement, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) will contest 26 seats, and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) has been allocated 11 seats. This leaves the BJP to field candidates for the remaining 89 seats in the 126-member assembly.
Following a meeting of the BJP’s central election committee, Sarma stated that discussions on seat adjustments are in the final stages, and the alliance will soon finalize its electoral strategy. He emphasized, “We are preparing to contest the elections in a coordinated manner to achieve better results.”
With a total of 126 seats in the Assam assembly, electoral activities are ramping up across the state. All political parties are busy finalizing alliances and candidates.
In the 2021 assembly elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) returned to power by winning 75 out of 126 seats. The BJP alone secured 60 seats, while the AGP won 9 seats.
In the previous elections, the BJP contested 92 seats, with the AGP receiving 26 and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) getting 8 seats.
The NDA’s victory in 2021 was significant as it marked the first time a non-Congress coalition retained power in Assam for two consecutive terms.
Seat-sharing plays a crucial role in Assam’s politics, especially in regions like Bodoland, where regional parties hold considerable influence.
Chief Minister Sarma also announced that the BJP will release its list of candidates on Wednesday. Voting for the 126-member assembly is scheduled for April 9, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
