New Delhi, March 6: Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan attended the 8th convocation ceremony of Nagaland University at its Lumami campus on March 6, 2026. This marked his first visit to the Northeast since taking office, starting with Nagaland.
During his address, the Vice President expressed his delight at being in Nagaland. He described the state as a unique blend of nature, culture, and courage, emphasizing that its true strength lies in its people and vibrant traditions. He highlighted that India’s unity in diversity is a source of national strength, asserting that the country’s resilience is rooted in the unity that connects its people rather than in differences.
The Vice President praised Nagaland University, which was established in 1994 after separating from North Eastern Hill University. He noted the university’s significant contributions to higher education and its efforts to enhance access to quality education across the Northeast. He commended initiatives like the establishment of a cancer research laboratory and the preservation and documentation of indigenous Naga languages and traditional laws.
Congratulating the graduating students, the Vice President urged them to balance progress with environmental conservation. He called on the youth to lead responsible lives, stay away from drugs, and contribute to nation-building. He stressed the importance of continuously updating knowledge and skills to tackle emerging challenges and seize opportunities in a rapidly changing world.
The Vice President underscored the central government’s special focus on the development of the Northeast under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. He mentioned the PM-DevINE (Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for North East) scheme, which promotes inclusive progress through infrastructure, social development, and livelihood projects, creating new opportunities for the youth.
He also praised the historic tripartite agreement signed in February 2026 between the central government, the Nagaland government, and the Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) under the leadership of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This agreement aims to address long-standing concerns and strengthen peace and development in the region.
The Vice President congratulated Nagaland Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla and the state government for their efforts towards peace and development. He highlighted the unprecedented infrastructure development in the Northeast over the past decade but emphasized that while roads and bridges connect regions, mutual interaction among people strengthens national unity.
On this occasion, the Vice President also laid the foundation stone for the HEFA Phase II buildings at Nagaland University. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries including Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, Deputy Chief Minister T.R. Zeliang, Chancellor Dr. Samudra Gupta Kashyap, and Vice Chancellor Professor Jagdish Kumar Patnaik. This event marked a significant step towards education and development in the Northeast.
