New Delhi, March 21: On the occasion of International Forest Day, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan urged citizens to commit to the conservation and enhancement of forests. He emphasized that forests are not only the “lungs” of our planet and vital for biodiversity but are also crucial for economies and the well-being of people. They serve as the foundation for millions of livelihoods, create jobs, reduce poverty, and strengthen food systems.
The Vice President took to the social media platform ‘X’ to express, βOn this International Forest Day, let us honor and protect our forest wealth. Additionally, let us reaffirm our commitment to the conservation and restoration of these invaluable natural resources to ensure a greener, more inclusive, and resilient future for all.β
International Forest Day is celebrated annually on March 21. It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of forests worldwide and highlight their role in sustaining life on Earth.
Each year, a specific theme is chosen for this day, selected through collaborative participation focused on forests. The theme for 2026 is “Forests and Economies,” illustrating how forests promote economic prosperity, support livelihoods, and provide nature-based solutions for a sustainable bio-economy.
The theme for 2025 was “Forests and Food,” which emphasized the contribution of forests to food security and nutrition. In 2024, the theme “Forests and Innovation” discussed measures to curb deforestation through new technologies like satellite monitoring.
