New Delhi, March 25: The PM Surya Home Free Electricity Scheme has successfully added 9.566 gigawatts of rooftop solar capacity since its launch in February 2024, according to a government statement released on Wednesday.
The government indicated that installing rooftop solar panels in one crore homes is projected to generate approximately 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity over the 25-year project lifespan, leading to a reduction of 720 million tons of carbon emissions.
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy stated that the PM Surya Home Free Electricity Scheme is expected to create around 1.7 million jobs across various sectors, including manufacturing, logistics, supply chain, sales and installation, operations and maintenance services, and financial services.
Additionally, the government announced that India’s green hydrogen production capacity is anticipated to reach 5 million metric tons per year by 2030.
Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Piyush Goyal, informed the Rajya Sabha that as of February 2026, India has already established a green hydrogen production capacity of approximately 8,000 tons per year.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) aims to position India as a global hub for the production, utilization, and export of green hydrogen and its derivative products.
According to the World Bank Group, renewable energy contributes 50-70% to the total cost of green hydrogen production.
Residential consumers with grid-connected electricity from local distribution companies can benefit from the PM Surya Home Free Electricity Scheme by applying for the RTS system on the national portal.
To achieve the goal of installing rooftop solar in one crore homes and to promote rooftop solar, the government has initiated an online process through the national portal, allowing direct distribution of subsidies to residential consumers’ bank accounts.
Furthermore, applicants can access loans at a discounted interest rate (repo rate plus 50 basis points) from nationalized banks, currently set at 5.75% per annum for a 10-year term without collateral.
