New Delhi, May 18: The swearing-in ceremony for the Congress-led UDF government in Kerala will take place today at the Central Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. VD Satheesan will take the oath as the Chief Minister.
This event symbolizes the UDF’s return to power in Kerala after a decade, following a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections.
Prominent leaders expected to attend include Congress MPs Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and the party’s national president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with chief ministers from Congress-ruled states.
A day before his swearing-in, Satheesan met with the renowned Cardinal Moran Mor Baselios Cleemis, also known as Cleemis Bawa. The Cardinal currently serves as the Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church and the Major Archbishop of Trivandrum.
The new government will assume office with a 21-member cabinet, including the Chief Minister. Political sources indicate that Congress is likely to secure 11 ministerial positions, including that of the Chief Minister.
Meanwhile, the coalition partner Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) is expected to receive five ministerial posts in the new government. Names under consideration include PK Kunhalikutty, KM Shaji, N Shamsuddin, and Parakkal Abdullah. However, reports suggest internal disagreements within the party regarding the inclusion of PK Basheer, with some factions expressing objections to his promotion.
Before the swearing-in ceremony on Monday, the final structure of the cabinet is anticipated to clarify the power-sharing arrangement within the newly elected UDF government.
