Chennai, March 21: Thol. Thirumavalavan, a prominent leader of the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) party and Member of Parliament, has voiced his concerns regarding the challenges faced by his party in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape. Despite a 25-year political journey, he stated that the party continues to struggle for adequate electoral opportunities.
During a Facebook Live session with party workers, Thirumavalavan remarked, “Even after 25 years, this political arena feels new to us. We have not fully adapted to it, and the social environment has not been in our favor.” He further alleged that certain forces do not wish for the VCK to emerge as a strong political entity.
Thirumavalavan emphasized, “There remains a significant segment that does not want us to grow stronger or take on a decisive role. We lack the encouragement and support necessary for our development.” Nevertheless, he acknowledged that despite these challenges, the VCK has maintained its presence in Tamil Nadu politics and is gradually emerging as an important political force.
He also addressed internal party issues, highlighting that seat allocation in coalition politics poses a significant challenge. The DMK-led alliance includes over 20 parties, which often results in the VCK receiving limited seats.
He explained, “When we receive fewer than 10 seats, there is a long queue of aspirants for tickets, which increases pressure during candidate selection.” Thirumavalavan clarified that the party invites applications from interested candidates for all seats and follows a democratic process.
However, he noted that merely applying or attending an interview does not guarantee a ticket. The final decision is made after considering various factors. He recalled that during the People’s Welfare Alliance, they had more freedom in candidate selection due to receiving more seats.
Thirumavalavan dismissed criticisms regarding ‘external candidates,’ stating that the party has fielded candidates from various regions and won 4 out of 6 contested seats.
He stressed the need for discipline and autonomous decision-making within the party, citing communist parties as examples of organized candidate selection and fundraising processes.
Despite the numerous challenges, Thirumavalavan affirmed that the VCK remains committed to democratic values and will continue its efforts for political expansion.
