Mumbai, May 21: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) assistant coach Shane Watson praised Varun Chakravarthy’s dedication following a crucial victory against the Mumbai Indians. Despite playing through pain, the mystery spinner played a vital role in the team’s success.
Chakravarthy, who is dealing with a hairline fracture in his left foot, delivered a disciplined spell in the middle overs. He bowled four overs, conceding just 28 runs, while maintaining pressure on the Mumbai batsmen. In the post-match press conference, Watson remarked, “I don’t exactly know where he is in his journey to full fitness. What I do know is that he is playing through some pain, which shows how brave he is. He wants to be here for KKR, and he is still bowling brilliantly.”
The former Australian all-rounder also discussed Chakravarthy’s impressive turnaround after a challenging start to the campaign. The initial matches were disappointing for him, as batsmen scored heavily against him. However, he has regained his rhythm and has been bowling exceptionally well alongside Sunil Narine in recent games.
“It has been fantastic to see Varun’s comeback after the first few matches of the season. He has made a tremendous return, consistently delivering impressive performances in the last few games. We are very fortunate to have a bowler with Varun’s skills, and he was eager to play for KKR despite managing his pain. He could have easily said, ‘Look, I don’t want to be part of this; I’ll just rest.’ That’s why we are lucky he was fully prepared to play through the pain and delivered an outstanding performance.”
