Uttar Pradeshs New India Literacy Campaign: Over 1.16 Million People Educated

Lucknow, June 8: Under the leadership of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Uttar Pradesh government is actively working to make education accessible to the last person in society and achieve a literacy-free state. The New India Literacy Program is becoming a catalyst for positive change in the lives of millions.

This initiative aims to educate individuals over the age of 15 who are illiterate. From 2022-23 to 2025-26, over 1.16 million people have been educated under this campaign. It strengthens self-reliance, awareness, and social empowerment through education.

Sponsored by the central government, the New India Literacy Program identifies illiterate citizens over 15 years old. Volunteers and trained master trainers assist in this effort. Beneficiaries are taught reading, writing, and arithmetic, along with essential knowledge for daily life, enabling them to participate more effectively in social and economic activities. By educating millions, the government is not only combating illiteracy but also playing a crucial role in building a self-reliant, aware, and empowered Uttar Pradesh.

Trained master trainers provide training to identified volunteers. Subsequently, these volunteers conduct literacy classes through both online and offline mediums. These classes, held across the state, instill new confidence in thousands of individuals. The government’s goal is not just to provide basic literacy but also to make citizens aware, capable, and self-reliant.

So far, seven literacy assessment exams have been conducted under the New India Literacy Program, with a total of 1,381,530 participants. Out of these, 1,168,292 were declared successful. In the 2022-23 exam, over 146,000 participants took part, while the latest exam in 2025-26 saw participation from over 401,000 individuals. These figures testify to the campaign’s growing reach and effectiveness.

The Yogi government is preparing to make the New India Literacy Program even more extensive and results-oriented in 2026-27. Following the guidelines of the Government of India, all districts in the state have been tasked with identifying illiterate individuals over 15 years old and educating them. Identified illiterates will be connected with volunteers who will receive specialized training from master trainers.

After this, volunteers will conduct literacy classes through both online and offline methods. The progress of the campaign will be regularly monitored, and literacy assessment exams will be held twice a year to evaluate the achievements of newly literate individuals as per the directives of the Government of India. The government’s goal is to connect as many people as possible with education, making them self-reliant, aware, and active participants in the mainstream of society.
