Washington, August 12: The United States has launched a new digital portal aimed at connecting defense companies, technology startups, investors, and researchers with the development of its proposed $185 billion ‘Golden Dome’ missile defense system.
General Mike Guetlein, director of the Golden Dome initiative, announced the ‘Golden Dome for America Ecosystem Hub’ during the annual Space and Missile Defense Symposium.
This platform will serve as a shared contact center for program officials, traditional defense contractors, commercial technology firms, venture capital investors, universities, research laboratories, and emerging entrepreneurs.
Through this portal, potential industry partners can register, upload their ideas, and send their designs directly to program decision-makers. The Department of Defense states that this will significantly reduce the months of delays typically associated with administrative processes.
The portal will also provide real-time, non-confidential information related to existing capability gaps within the program. Companies and investors can utilize this information to align their research and development efforts with the program’s immediate needs.
Guetlein emphasized the necessity of creating a defense shield capable of adapting faster than emerging aerial threats. He stated, “We are breaking down unnecessary barriers in government processes, fostering innovation through partnerships, and leveraging the true strength of the ‘Arsenal of Freedom’.”
He further noted that they are dismantling the outdated walls between commercial innovation and national defense, aiming to eliminate the ‘valley of death’ where critical technologies often get stalled.
The Department has described this portal as a significant shift in America’s approach to building a next-generation multi-layered security system against missiles and other aerial threats.
Guetlein mentioned that the government will utilize existing technologies to keep project costs manageable and promote competition among suppliers. He affirmed their commitment to responsibly using every dollar of the $185 billion needed to develop the Golden Dome while investing in the nation’s defense and security.
This portal will also help strengthen supply chains and expand the American defense industrial base, providing qualified suppliers with opportunities to connect with new investment sources.
According to the Department, participation from multiple companies will reduce vulnerabilities associated with smaller suppliers, decrease reliance on any single company, and expedite production capacity.
The Golden Dome is being designed as a multi-layered defense system capable of detecting, tracking, and intercepting various types of aerial and missile threats. Typically, such systems rely on interconnected sensors, command and control systems, and interceptors that operate at different stages of an attack.
