Unseasonal Rain and Hailstorm Devastate Crops in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, March 22: Unseasonal hailstorms and strong winds have caused significant damage to crops across several districts in Tamil Nadu. In response, the state government has launched a large-scale assessment campaign.

Officials report that over 850 hectares of agricultural land have been affected, raising concerns among farmers about potential income loss. The districts most impacted include Madurai, Salem, and Tenkasi, where approximately 810 hectares of crops have been damaged.

Key crops such as rice, cotton, sugarcane, oilseeds, and millet have suffered heavy losses, particularly as many were nearing harvest. Farmers have expressed worries about the timing of this weather event, noting that rice fields were due for early harvesting.

The sudden impact has led to crop falls, damaged grains, and reduced yield potential, which could significantly affect market prices.

Additionally, horticultural crops in various districts, including Coimbatore, Dindigul, Erode, Krishnagiri, Namakkal, Salem, and Tirupur, have also been harmed due to strong winds and intermittent rains. Officials estimate that around 40 hectares of fruit and vegetable farming have been affected.

In light of the situation, the Tamil Nadu government has instructed officials from the revenue and agriculture departments to conduct joint ground inspections in the affected areas. Teams have already visited villages to assess crop conditions and gather data directly from farmers.

The ongoing survey aims to determine the exact extent of the damage and ensure that affected farmers receive appropriate assistance. Findings will be compiled into detailed district-wise reports to aid the government in finalizing relief measures and compensation packages.

Authorities are taking steps to expedite the assessment process, aiming to provide timely support to farmers recovering from this unexpected setback.
