Mysore, May 17: Across the globe, numerous temples dedicated to Narayana showcase stunning architecture and captivating stories that strengthen the faith of devotees. One such temple is located in Mysore, Karnataka. This star-shaped temple was constructed in 1258 AD and features three sanctums.
Situated about 35 kilometers from Mysore on the banks of the Kaveri River, the Chennakeshava Temple in Somnathpur is a magnificent example of Indian architecture. Designed in the shape of a star, it is dedicated to the beautiful form of Lord Vishnu known as ‘Chenna Keshava.’ The temple houses three distinct sanctums where deities Keshava, Venugopal, and Janardhana reside.
In 2023, this architectural marvel was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Thousands of tourists and pilgrims visit this masterpiece from the Hoysala period.
The Chennakeshava Temple, also referred to as the Somnathpur Temple, was commissioned by Somnath Dandanayaka, a general under Hoysala King Narasimha III, in 1258 AD. It exemplifies the artistry and devotion of the Hoysala dynasty. Remarkably, the temple has retained its original form, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of that era. ‘Chennakeshava’ translates to ‘Beautiful Keshava,’ reflecting the temple’s aesthetic appeal.
Built on a five-tiered star-shaped platform, the temple is characteristic of Hoysala architecture. This unique design allows for thousands of sculptures and carvings to be easily visible on its walls. Every inch of the temple is intricately carved, depicting deities, mythological tales, daily life scenes, flowers, animals, and geometric patterns.
One of the temple’s most distinctive features is its trikuta design, which consists of three separate sanctums. The central sanctum houses Lord Keshava, while one sanctum features Venugopal, the flute-playing Krishna, and the third sanctum is dedicated to Janardhana.
All three deities are exquisitely crafted and artistic. The pillars, ceilings, and doorways of the temple also showcase remarkable carvings. The central ceiling features a grand lotus-shaped mandala. The temple is a protected monument, hosting special events during festivals like Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Janmashtami.
The Somnathpur Temple is a significant part of Mysore’s cultural journey. Nearby attractions include the grand Mysore Palace, Chamundeshwari Temple (on Chamundi Hill), and St. Philomena’s Church.
