Guwahati, June 3: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia launched Mission Sneha Jori on Tuesday, aimed at uplifting Assam’s renowned Muga silk industry under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This ambitious initiative, worth ₹411 crores, will pave the way for progress and development for approximately 260,000 weavers and silk farmers in Assam. The mission was inaugurated in collaboration with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the Minister of State for Textiles.
During a press interaction, Minister Scindia stated, “Today marks the beginning of a new era for Assam’s Muga silk industry under the Prime Minister’s leadership. This mission will open new avenues for progress and development for our weavers and silk farmers. The plan includes six key components that will invigorate the entire value chain.”
He mentioned that efforts are underway to restart a spinning mill. New pathways are being created to promote silk farming and cocoon production. Four common facility centers will be established to facilitate central processing. Additionally, a modern digital testing lab, an innovation lab, and a tourism park will also be developed. These facilities will significantly enhance production, processing, quality control, and marketing across all sectors.
Currently, silk farmers earn between ₹18,000 to ₹21,000 per kilogram for their produce. The mission aims to increase this income to ₹50,000 per kilogram in the international market. The entire team is committed to achieving this goal.
Minister Scindia described this occasion as a historic day for Assam, stating, “Under the Prime Minister’s guidance, the northeastern states will emerge as economic powerhouses. We will advance by linking economic capabilities with our rich cultural heritage. Muga silk is globally renowned for its unique luster, strength, and eco-friendly properties. This initiative will not only strengthen the local economy but also enhance rural employment opportunities.”
He emphasized that Mission Sneha Jori seeks to connect Assam’s traditional art with modern technology and global markets. This will lead to increased income for the weaving community and new entrepreneurial opportunities for the youth. This initiative will be a milestone in the overall development of Northeast India. The success of this mission will solidify Assam’s Muga silk’s identity not only in the domestic market but also on the international stage. This unique effort to empower weavers and silk farmers, while preserving cultural heritage, is a significant step towards realizing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of an Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).
