Beijing, February 16: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commended China’s decision to fully implement zero-tariff measures for 53 African countries starting May 1, 2026. He made this statement on February 14 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, during the 39th African Union Summit.
In a press conference held at the African Union headquarters, Guterres urged developed nations and economies to adopt similar measures. He emphasized the necessity for Africa to engage in tariff-free trade, noting that restrictive trade and tariff policies hinder the competitiveness of African products.
“I have always strongly supported free trade and advocated for lowering tariff levels globally, which can create significant opportunities for global economic growth,” Guterres stated.
According to reports, China will implement its zero-tariff policy for the 53 African nations with which it has diplomatic relations starting May 1, 2026. Additionally, China will continue to promote the signing of economic partnership agreements for shared development and enhance access for African products through measures like the ‘Green Channel.’
