Many spices available are often tainted with harmful additives, such as lead chromate in turmeric or brick powder in chili. These adulterated spices can be detrimental to health, making it crucial for everyone to distinguish between authentic and fake spices.

Let’s start with coriander powder. To test its purity, take a glass of water and add two teaspoons of coriander powder. Leave it for half an hour. If the powder settles at the bottom, it is pure. If it floats or mixes with the water, it is adulterated.

Rock salt, known for its purity, has been used in households for centuries. However, it is also susceptible to adulteration. To test it, cut a potato in half and place some rock salt on it. Add a few drops of lemon juice. If the rock salt is genuine, there will be no color change. Conversely, if it is adulterated, the potato will turn black or blue.

Next, let’s examine red chili powder. Fill a glass with water and add two teaspoons of red chili powder. If the chili floats on the surface, it is pure. If it sinks and turns the water red, it is adulterated. Black pepper powder is also prone to adulteration. To test it, use water again. If it sinks, it is impure; if it floats, it is completely pure.

Turmeric powder is essential for enhancing both the flavor and color of dishes. To test its authenticity, add turmeric powder to a glass of water. Pure turmeric will gradually settle without releasing its color, while adulterated turmeric will dissolve and color the water immediately. Spices serve not only to enhance flavor but also to promote health. Therefore, do not compromise on your well-being.
