New Delhi: Senior officials from the Dharamshala Government Degree College administration will appear before a five-member fact-finding committee appointed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to investigate the death of a student at the college.
The UGC committee plans to conduct an on-site inspection to verify whether the arrangements documented by the college are effectively implemented on the ground. The panel will engage with teachers, administrative staff, and other college personnel to assess the institution’s current environment and identify any challenges based on students’ experiences.
The committee was formed following the death of a student on December 26 and is tasked with examining all aspects related to the incident. Chaired by Professor Raj Kumar Mittal, the panel includes three members and a coordinator and is expected to submit its report within seven days.
The UGC emphasised that student safety remains its highest priority and assured strict action against those found responsible. The committee will scrutinise the college’s adherence to UGC regulations, including anti-ragging measures and policies for preventing, prohibiting, and redressing sexual harassment. It will evaluate whether these rules were properly enforced and review the college’s mechanisms for addressing student complaints.
In addition, the inquiry will examine the effectiveness of the college’s policies and anti-harassment initiatives, as well as the responsiveness of its student support system. A key focus will be identifying any lapses or errors at the time of the incident to recommend measures that could prevent similar occurrences in the future.
The panel may also suggest concrete steps to avoid recurrence of such incidents and investigate other relevant factors. The UGC reiterated that there will be no compromise on student safety and that stringent measures will follow based on the committee’s findings.
