New Delhi, March 30: Across India, devotees typically offer flowers and fruits to goddess temples. While many temples still practice the tradition of coconut offerings and animal sacrifices, there exists a unique temple where devotees present five stones as offerings instead.
Located in Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh, the Maa Bagdai Temple is renowned for its miraculous aura. Although the temple is small, the faith of its devotees is immense. People travel from far and wide to seek blessings and fulfill their wishes. Instead of coconuts, devotees offer five stones and a single flower, a tradition that has persisted for centuries. It is believed that Maa Bagdai is the awakened goddess of the forest, safeguarding the woods and the people living nearby.
Local folklore suggests that the temple was once situated deep in the forest. Over a century ago, a shepherd discovered the goddess’s idol. In a dream, the goddess instructed him to establish her idol in a specific location. The shepherd built a small temple but had nothing to offer her. In his moment of despair, he expressed, “Maa, I have nothing to present as an offering.” The goddess then appeared to him, instructing him to offer five stones instead.
She conveyed that she was not hungry for offerings but rather for the love of her devotees. This is why, since then, stones have been offered at the temple. Local belief holds that if a devotee sincerely presents five stones and a flower, and their wish is granted, they must return to the temple to offer the same again.
The temple remains nestled among dense forests, offering a breathtaking view of spirituality and nature. During the Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri festivals, thousands of devotees flock to the temple, where elaborate decorations are made for the goddess over nine days.
