Kolkata, March 30: Abhishek Banerjee, the National General Secretary of the Trinamool Congress, criticized the central government on Monday regarding the alleged lack of funding for West Bengal. He stated that if the BJP can provide evidence that the central government has released funds under the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme for the state’s residents, his party will withdraw candidates from all 291 assembly seats in West Bengal.
Speaking at a public rally in Jhalda, Purulia district, Banerjee emphasized that his statement was not made out of mere emotional fervor but was based on specific circumstances. He asserted that the ruling party at the center has long deprived West Bengal of economic support.
The Trinamool Congress has repeatedly raised concerns about the lack of central allocations for rural development and various social welfare schemes. In this context, Banerjee directly challenged local BJP MP Jyotirmay Singh Mahato.
He stated that if Mahato can prove that the Modi government has contributed even 10 paise to the housing scheme for the poor in the last five years, the Trinamool Congress will withdraw its candidates from all 291 seats. This statement further reinforced the accusations against the BJP regarding economic deprivation in West Bengal.
Banerjee argued that after securing votes from the people of West Bengal, the BJP has deprived them of their rightful economic benefits. He pointed out that allocations from the central government have been stalled in various sectors, from the housing scheme to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He urged voters to seize this election as an opportunity to respond to this deprivation and to not give a single vote to the BJP, which he claims has stripped people of their rights.
He also claimed that there is no clear record of what the BJP has achieved for West Bengal in the past five years. According to him, the central government has not provided any financial aid; instead, it has exacerbated the suffering of the common people by making them stand in long queues repeatedly.
