As per the official Navy statement, the aircraft went down in a field approximately 40 miles southwest of Fresno city, near the Naval Air Station. The jet caught fire upon crashing, but the pilot managed to eject safely. The crash occurred around 6:30 PM local time, and the exact cause is currently under investigation.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office reported that California Fire officials assisted the pilot after the crash. The Navy confirmed that the aircraft was assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-125, also known as the “Rough Raiders,” which is responsible for training pilots and aircrew.

The F-35 is a fifth-generation combat aircraft and one of the most advanced fighter jets in the world. It is a critical part of the U.S. military fleet and carries an estimated price tag of around $100 million.

Earlier this year in January, an F-35A aircraft also crashed during a training mission at Eielson Air Force Base in Alaska. The pilot in that incident also survived without injury.

Lockheed Martin, the manufacturer of the aircraft, states that more than 17 countries around the world operate the F-35. In recent years, the jet has faced increased scrutiny over maintenance and operational challenges.
