Washington, June 6: The U.S. military has claimed to have shot down four Iranian attack drones heading towards the Strait of Hormuz. In addition, U.S. forces have conducted strikes against Iran’s coastal radar installations.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) issued a brief statement indicating that action was taken due to an immediate threat to vessels in the area. CENTCOM stated, “Just moments ago, the military shot down four one-way attack drones sent by Iran towards the Strait of Hormuz. The drones posed an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic.”
According to Central Command, the U.S. military retaliated against Iran’s surveillance infrastructure along the southern coast. The statement added, “U.S. forces targeted Iran’s coastal surveillance radar stations on Goruk and Kishm Islands to prevent further attacks.”
However, CENTCOM did not provide information on casualties, damage assessments, or the types of aircraft and weapons used in the operation. The statement also did not clarify whether the drones directly targeted any commercial vessels.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most strategically significant waterways in the world, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. The U.S. military maintains a significant presence in the Middle East and regularly patrols major maritime routes used by international commercial shipping.
Central Command emphasized that U.S. forces are prepared for further action if necessary. The statement concluded, “U.S. forces remain vigilant and are ready to respond to Iran’s unwarranted aggression in self-defense.”
This latest development has further escalated tensions between the U.S. and Iran.
