Washington, April 5: A senior U.S. lawmaker has condemned China’s record on religious freedom, particularly in the lead-up to Easter. John Moolenaar, chair of the China-related selection committee, accused the Chinese Communist Party of persecuting Christians while calling for greater freedoms within the country.
Moolenaar stated that the faith of imprisoned Christians in China continues to inspire others despite state oppression. In a statement released for Easter, he referenced the Apostle Paul, who, while imprisoned for his beliefs, wrote that his incarceration encouraged others to spread the Lord’s message without fear.
He emphasized that a similar spirit is evident among Christians in China today. The Communist government has imprisoned pastors like Jin and Jimmy Lai, yet this has not deterred people; instead, it has motivated them to share the teachings of Jesus Christ even more fervently.
Moolenaar urged Chinese leadership to change its stance, saying, “As we celebrate Easter this Sunday, I pray that, just as Paul was once a cruel persecutor of Christians, Xi Jinping and the CCP will come to know the truth and grant the people of China the freedom of religion—a right we Americans have enjoyed for 250 years.”
These remarks come amid ongoing scrutiny in Washington regarding China’s treatment of religious minorities, including Christians and Muslims. Lawmakers from both the Republican and Democratic parties have expressed concerns over restrictions on religious practices, surveillance, and detention.
