
Kabul, April 10: Heavy rains and sudden floods in Afghanistan have caused significant damage across the country. According to Tolo News, the United Nations reported that severe seasonal flooding over the past two weeks has led to widespread destruction.
From March 26 to April 6, torrential rains and subsequent flooding have impacted several provinces. Hundreds of villages have been submerged, affecting over 73,000 individuals.
More than 9,000 homes have been damaged, and over 15,500 acres of agricultural land have been destroyed, raising serious concerns about food security in the affected areas.
A report from Xinhua indicated that over 500 livestock have perished, exacerbating the crisis for rural families dependent on farming and animal husbandry.
Earlier, on April 7, three women lost their lives, and two children were injured when a wall collapsed in the Maton area of Khost province due to heavy rainfall. Local governor spokesperson Mustaghfar Gurbaz stated that the wall’s structure weakened because of the recent downpour.
Injured children were taken to a nearby health center for treatment, as reported by Pajhwok Afghan News.
Meanwhile, local authorities noted that on April 7, heavy rains in Nangarhar province caused a roof collapse, resulting in at least 10 fatalities and six injuries.
Ariana News reported that the most affected areas include Jalalabad, Sherzad, Khogyani, Haska Mina, and Angoor Bagh.
On Monday, officials stated that in the last 12 days, heavy rains, sudden floods, landslides, lightning strikes, and building collapses have led to at least 110 deaths and 160 injuries.
According to Khama Press, authorities mentioned that seven individuals are still missing, and forecasts of further rainfall have raised concerns that the death toll may rise.
Officials reported that 958 homes have been completely destroyed, while 4,155 homes sustained minor damage, leaving thousands of families in urgent need of shelter and assistance. Over 325 kilometers of roads have been damaged, affecting businesses, agricultural land, irrigation canals, and drinking water wells.
