Raipur, February 12: Panic erupted in Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh, on Thursday when two undertrial prisoners escaped from police custody during a court hearing. This incident has raised further concerns about the security of the state’s judicial and prison systems.

The escape occurred in the Raipur District Court premises when both accused, facing charges of attempted murder and other serious offenses, were brought in from Raipur Central Jail for a routine hearing.

According to police officials, the fugitives, Rajesh Markandey and Tularam Markandey, were in judicial custody for serious charges, including attempted murder. Reports indicate that they were under the supervision of a court clerk during the hearing when they seized the opportunity to flee. Police are currently conducting raids at potential hideouts.

Both accused managed to escape from the custody area or within the court premises by taking advantage of a brief lapse in security. Witnesses reported chaos among court staff, lawyers, and security personnel, prompting immediate alarms to be raised.

Despite being handcuffed, the prisoners likely overpowered or deceived the accompanying constables to make their getaway amid the confusion.

Senior police officials arrived at the scene and initiated a comprehensive search operation. Teams from multiple police stations, including special units, have been deployed throughout the city and surrounding areas.

Checkpoints have been established on major highways, bus stands, railway stations, and other exit points, while raids continue at known hideouts and the residences of associates.

Alerts have also been issued to neighboring districts and states. This latest incident comes amid ongoing security concerns regarding Chhattisgarh’s prisons and courts.
