Kolkata, August 1: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two more individuals, Sagar Sonkar and Sahib Sonkar, in connection with the murder of Chandranath Rath, the personal assistant to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. A special CBI court in Kolkata remanded both suspects to seven days of custody on Friday evening.
Although they were presented in court on Friday, CBI officials did not disclose the circumstances of their arrests, including the location or time.
The agency has not clearly stated the political affiliations of the arrested individuals. However, they claim that both had previously been associated with the Trinamool Congress, the party that held power in West Bengal until recently.
An insider from the investigation revealed that despite their past ties to the Trinamool Congress, both suspects officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) before the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.
The source also mentioned that investigations revealed the arrested individuals maintained connections with several influential leaders from the Trinamool Congress.
CBI officials have intercepted some of their telephone conversations, which have provided crucial information for the ongoing investigation. With these latest arrests, the total number of individuals apprehended in this case has risen to eleven.
Chandranath Rath was murdered in Madhyamgram, North 24 Parganas district, on the evening of May 6, shortly after returning home. This incident occurred just two days after the West Bengal Assembly election results, in which the BJP achieved a significant victory, ousting the Trinamool Congress government led by Mamata Banerjee, which had been in power since 2011.
The initial investigation into Rath’s murder was conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the West Bengal Police, before the case was handed over to the CBI.
Rath, a former Indian Air Force employee, served as the executive assistant to Suvendu Adhikari, having been with him since the time Adhikari was the opposition leader in the West Bengal Assembly.
