New Delhi, August 1: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India announced on Friday that 2,273 Indian citizens have been deported from the United States so far in 2026.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Since January 1, 2026, a total of 2,273 Indian nationals have been sent back from the U.S. In comparison, 3,567 Indian citizens were deported in 2025.”
He further explained, “We continuously collaborate with various foreign governments on deportation matters. Whenever a case arises, we conduct thorough investigations to confirm the individual’s nationality. Only when we are completely assured that the person is an Indian citizen do we assist in their return process.”
India has consistently reiterated its longstanding policy against illegal migration, emphasizing its commitment to promoting legal migration.
The Ministry has previously stated, “If an individual lacks legal status in a country and claims to be an Indian citizen, we investigate their documents and background. The process of repatriation only advances after confirming their nationality. This procedure is also followed in cases of deportation from the U.S.”
Meanwhile, in light of stricter immigration regulations in the U.S., the White House defended a $100,000 H-1B visa fee imposed by President Donald Trump last month. Despite a federal judge’s ruling that overturned this fee, the administration announced plans to appeal the decision, stating that the judge had exceeded legal boundaries by labeling the fee as an illegal tax.
White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers remarked, “President Trump has clear legal authority to restrict the entry of any class of foreign nationals he deems not in the interest of the U.S. He has exercised that authority.”
She added, “The H-1B program has been misused for decades, and President Trump has taken steps to rectify this. A federal court in Washington has previously upheld a similar order. The administration is confident that the appeal will overturn this ruling.”
