Two More Arrested in the Murder Case of Minor Girl in Kaliganj, West Bengal

Kolkata, June 24: In a significant development in the murder case of a minor girl, Tamanna Khatun, in Kaliganj, Nadia district of West Bengal, police have made two additional arrests. The West Bengal police announced on Wednesday that the arrests occurred late Tuesday night.

This case is linked to a tragic incident from June 2025, during which violence erupted amid a political rally.

According to police reports, the arrested individuals have been identified as Sabit Sheikh and Ziarul Sheikh, both of whom had been on the run for an extended period. Following credible information about their whereabouts, police conducted a raid and apprehended them. Authorities stated that both suspects will be presented in a Nadia district court on Wednesday, where police will seek their remand.

The incident took place on June 23, coinciding with the announcement of results for the Kaliganj assembly by-election. In this election, TMC candidate Alifa Ahmed achieved a significant victory. During the victory procession, it is alleged that some TMC workers threw crude bombs at Tamanna Khatun’s home, resulting in her immediate death.

Tamanna’s family is reported to be supporters of the CPM. Subsequently, her mother, Sabina Iyasmeen Sheikh, contested as the CPM candidate for the Kaliganj seat in the recently concluded West Bengal assembly elections but was defeated by TMC’s Alifa Ahmed for the second consecutive time.

The state administration has adopted a stringent stance on this matter. A police official indicated that the suspects had been evading capture for a long time and were caught based on intelligence reports.

Moreover, following a meeting between the Chief Minister and Tamanna’s mother, the pace of action is believed to have intensified. On Tuesday, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari assured the victim’s family of justice during their meeting. Within approximately 12 hours of that meeting, both suspects were arrested.

Sabina Iyasmeen Sheikh expressed satisfaction with the arrests and thanked the Chief Minister. In a media interaction, she mentioned that the Chief Minister listened attentively to her concerns and assured her of justice, prompting swift police action.

Meanwhile, during a discussion in the assembly, the Chief Minister stated that the state government is committed to a zero-tolerance policy towards crimes against women.
