Death Toll Rises to 53 in Houthi Missile Attack on Military Base in Southeastern Yemen
A missile strike by Houthi rebels in Yemens Shabwa province has left 53 dead and over 200 injured, prompting urgent medical response.

Shabwa, October 19 (Daily Kiran) : A missile attack by Houthi rebels on a military base in Yemen’s oil-rich Shabwa province has resulted in a tragic increase in casualties, now totaling 53 dead and more than 200 injured. The local government reported the attack occurred on Monday at the Al-Alam military base, located in the Jardan district, near the provincial capital of Ataq.
According to officials, the Houthi rebels launched multiple ballistic missiles targeting the Ahmed Al-Suleimani Training Center at the base, where new recruits were undergoing training with internal security forces. Initial reports indicated that at least 25 soldiers had died and over 30 were injured, but the latest figures reveal a much higher toll.
Rescue teams are currently working to evacuate the injured from the site, while hospitals in Shabwa are preparing for an influx of patients. Those with severe injuries are being transferred to specialized medical facilities for urgent care.
The Houthi group later claimed responsibility for the attack. Al-Masirah TV, which is aligned with the Houthis, stated that their fighters aimed at a gathering of Saudi-backed forces at the Al-Alam military base. The group has also called on all Yemenis to vacate military camps where Saudi Arabia is reportedly deploying troops.
The Al-Alam base is a significant military installation under the control of forces loyal to Yemen’s internationally recognized government. The attack comes amid escalating conflict between Houthi rebels and Saudi coalition-backed government forces across various fronts.
The conflict in Yemen began in late 2014 when Houthi rebels seized control of the capital, Sanaa, and much of the northern region. In 2015, a Saudi-led coalition intervened in support of the Yemeni government, leading to a protracted civil war that continues to devastate the nation.
