New Delhi, April 19: The Delhi Police apprehended two suspects involved in a murder attempt during a shootout in the Chhawla area early Sunday morning. Officials reported that the case was resolved within 24 hours of the incident being registered.
The incident occurred on April 17 in Shyam Vihar Phase 2, where two armed assailants arrived on a motorcycle. One of them attempted to shoot the complainant at close range, but the weapon malfunctioned. The police registered the case on April 18 and launched a manhunt for the suspects.
Acting on a tip-off, a team from the AATS Dwarka intercepted the suspects around 5:35 AM near Urban Extension Road (UAR). Instead of surrendering, one suspect, Rocky, opened fire on the police team, firing three rounds. One bullet struck a head constable’s bulletproof vest.
According to police, the team exercised restraint and responded in controlled self-defense. They fired back three rounds, injuring Rocky (22) in the left knee. After a brief struggle, he was apprehended. The second suspect, Sumit (24), was also captured, and a loaded country-made pistol was recovered from him.
Police confirmed that Rocky was the individual who attempted to shoot in Shyam Vihar Phase 2, while Sumit was riding the motorcycle. A 7.65 mm pistol, along with two cartridges and three empty shells, was seized from Rocky, while Sumit had one cartridge with his weapon. The motorcycle used in the crime was also recovered.
Authorities stated that the injured suspect has been admitted to the hospital, and a new case has been filed under additional sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. The police emphasized their ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards crime, asserting that they confront heinous offenders and armed assailants with courage, restraint, and swift justice.
