New Delhi, June 2: Trupti Murgunde is recognized as one of India’s finest badminton players. She achieved remarkable success during a time when athletes lacked the facilities available today. Despite facing defeat in the finals of the national championships three times, Trupti persevered and ultimately claimed the title in her fourth attempt. Additionally, she played a crucial role in securing a bronze medal for India in the Commonwealth Games team event.
Born on June 3, 1982, in Pune, Trupti developed a deep interest in badminton from a young age. At just nine years old, she enrolled in an academy in Pune, where she learned the intricacies of the sport under the guidance of Vasant Gore.
Her passion for badminton drove her to Bengaluru at a young age, where she trained at Prakash Padukone’s academy. Her hard work and consistent practice soon led her to become a national champion at the junior level.
However, the journey to becoming a national champion was fraught with challenges. Trupti’s dream of winning the national title came close three times, but she faced defeat in the finals each time. Finally, in 2009, her wait ended as she became the women’s singles national badminton champion.
On the international stage, Trupti made her mark by winning a total of five gold medals at the South Asian Games, including singles gold in 2004 and 2006.
In 2006, she was part of the Indian team that won a bronze medal in the team event at the Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne. Throughout her career, she secured six international titles and was honored with the Dhyan Chand Award in 2020 for her outstanding contributions to badminton.
After retiring, Trupti served as a selector for the Indian national badminton team. She also worked as a talent scout under the Khelo India program, contributing to the development of many promising athletes.
