Washington, 12 December. US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at centralising the regulation of artificial intelligence (AI) across the country. He expressed concerns that varied rules across states could slow technological progress and threaten America’s lead over China.

Speaking at the signing, Trump said the United States is far ahead in the AI sector with a strong industry that leads China and other nations. He described it as a major global competition where only one can win — either the US or China — and currently, America is in the lead.

The order intends to establish a single national framework for AI regulation. The administration stressed that if each state has different regulations, investments in data centres, computing infrastructure, and energy-related projects might halt. Trump stated that requiring companies to obtain approvals from all 50 states would make progress impossible.

A senior government official explained that leadership in AI is directly linked to economic growth, employment, national security, and technological capability. Hence, it is essential to operate under a unified national system.

At the event, David Sax noted that states are rapidly passing AI laws, with over a thousand proposals and more than a hundred enacted, mainly in California, New York, and Illinois. Sax said the federal government will work with Congress to create a national framework, limiting overly strict state regulations while maintaining necessary provisions in areas like child safety.

Speakers also described AI as a battleground for political values. Trump warned that slowing AI development would benefit China the most. When asked if he was more concerned about China or AI-related risks, he replied, “Both.”

He highlighted that AI is accelerating progress in medicine and medical research and has advanced far beyond initial expectations despite being in its early stages.

The executive order directs the government to take strong measures to ensure AI operates smoothly within one national framework, avoiding disruptions caused by different state regulations.
