Washington, April 7: U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized NATO and key allies for their lack of support in America’s military campaign against Iran. He labeled the alliance a “paper tiger.”
Trump stated, “NATO is a paper tiger. The alliance has failed to step up during the fight.” He expressed frustration that allied nations crossed boundaries by refusing to provide logistical support, even denying access to landing strips.
He also included Japan, South Korea, and Australia in his criticism, saying, “Japan did not help us, Australia did not help us, South Korea did not help us.”
According to Trump, the burden of the conflict has fallen solely on the United States. He emphasized America’s dominance among allies, asserting, “NATO is us.”
These remarks highlight the increasing tension between the U.S. and its allies amid escalating conflicts with Iran.
The Wall Street Journal reported that many American partners view Washington’s approach as unpredictable, hesitating to engage in the conflict despite relying on U.S. security guarantees.
The report indicated that rising energy disruptions and economic losses have placed allies in a difficult position. Trump also criticized European allies for refusing to participate despite longstanding relationships.
The lack of participation from allies marks a departure from previous U.S.-led conflicts, where coalition support was crucial.
In response to a question, Trump expressed his disappointment with NATO, stating, “I have to tell you, I am very disappointed in NATO. I think this is a stain on NATO that will never be erased.”
Trump added, “We went to NATO. I didn’t push very hard. I just said, if you want to help, great, but they said ‘no, no, no, we will not help.’ I said, that’s fine. I have always said NATO is a paper tiger.”
He remarked, “Putin does not fear NATO. Putin fears us, very much. He has told me this several times. I know him very well. NATO is a paper tiger. They have truly crossed the line by not helping. They wouldn’t even give us landing strips.”
President Trump concluded, “Think about it. It’s not just NATO. Do you know who else did not help us? South Korea, Australia, and Japan. We have 50,000 troops in Japan to protect them from North Korea. We have 45,000 troops in South Korea to protect them from Kim Jong-un, with whom I have a very good relationship, as you know.”
