Attack at Riyadh Airport Claims 12 Lives Amid Ongoing Conflict with Houthi Forces

Riyadh, October 11 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic attack occurred at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of 12 individuals and leaving 309 others injured. The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation confirmed the news in a statement released early Sunday.

Among the deceased, four were Saudi nationals, while the remaining eight were foreign residents, including two from Bangladesh and one each from the United States, Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Palestine, and Sudan. The injured are receiving treatment in various hospitals, with some reported to be in critical condition.

As a precautionary measure, airport operations have been temporarily suspended to assess the damage and conduct security checks.

In response to the attack, the Houthi group issued a statement expressing readiness to take reciprocal steps with Saudi Arabia to ensure that airports, ports, and humanitarian facilities remain safe from escalating military conflict.

According to Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah TV, Saudi Arabia has initiated a new wave of air and missile strikes targeting Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. These attacks have focused on the international airport in the Houthi-held capital of Sana’a, regions near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, and several northern provinces.

On the same day, Yemen’s government forces claimed that over 1,900 attacks had been carried out across various fronts in the country within the last 24 hours, resulting in the deaths or incapacitation of more than 1,150 Houthi fighters and the destruction or damage of over 180 military and logistical vehicles. However, these figures have not been independently verified.

Military sources informed that fighting has intensified around the southwestern city of Taiz, increasing pressure on government forces defending the city against advancing Houthi fighters. This has also affected critical roadways connecting southern Yemen’s government-controlled areas. Reports indicate fierce clashes are ongoing to the south of the city.

Supported by Saudi airstrikes, the Yemeni government launched a significant military campaign on Monday aimed at reclaiming Houthi-held territories, with the most intense fighting reported around the Bab al-Mandeb Strait.

Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since late 2014, when Houthi rebels seized control of the capital, Sana’a, and large parts of the northern region. A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 to support the internationally recognized Yemeni government, which currently operates from the southern port city of Aden.

This recent surge in violence marks a significant escalation, coming after a period of relative calm following a UN-mediated ceasefire in 2022.
