Tributes Pour in for Maharaja Hari Singh on His Death Anniversary

New Delhi, April 26: On the death anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, heartfelt tributes were paid by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and various BJP leaders.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha took to social media platform X, expressing, “A tribute to the great statesman and beloved son of Mother India, Maharaja Hari Singh, on his death anniversary. His enduring legacy will continue to inspire generations, reminding us of the values of social justice, inclusive governance, unity, and harmony that he staunchly supported.”

Former Chief Minister of Bihar, Vijay Kumar Sinha, also shared his condolences on X, stating, “On the death anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, a people’s leader, and a strong supporter of free India, I pay my heartfelt tribute.”

Dinesh Sharma, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh and Rajya Sabha MP, similarly honored Maharaja Hari Singh on X, saying, “On his death anniversary, I pay my heartfelt tribute to Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, a people’s leader, and a strong supporter of free India.”

Maharaja Hari Singh was the last ruler of the princely state of Jammu and Kashmir. He was the son of Maharaja Ranbir Singh and the brother of former Maharaja Pratap Singh, being the youngest son of Raja Amar Singh. He inherited the throne from his uncle, Maharaja Pratap Singh. Throughout his life, he had four marriages, and his fourth wife, Maharani Tara Devi, bore him a son named Karan Singh.

After the death of his uncle in 1923, Maharaja Hari Singh ascended to the throne of Jammu and Kashmir. Following India’s independence in 1947, he wished for Jammu and Kashmir to remain an independent state. However, he later decided to accede to India to seek support against the invasion of tribal armed forces and the Pakistani army.

Maharaja Hari Singh remained the nominal Maharaja of the state until 1952 when the Indian government abolished the monarchy. He spent his final days in Mumbai, passing away on April 26, 1961.
