Tragic Suicide in West Bengal Linked to Voter List Anxiety

Kolkata, March 4: A man in the Magrahat area of South 24 Parganas, West Bengal, tragically took his own life after discovering his name listed under the ‘provisional’ category in the final voter list following a Special Intensive Revision (SIR).

The deceased has been identified as 41-year-old Rafique Ali Ghazi. Authorities from the Ushiti police station recovered his body late last night from his home, where he was found hanging from a ceiling fan. The body has been sent for post-mortem at Diamond Harbour Medical College and Hospital.

Family members reported that Ghazi had been anxious since receiving the SIR notice and had submitted all required documents. He informed his family about the situation and appeared despondent after reviewing the final voter list released on February 28, which included his name but categorized it as provisional.

On the evening of Dol Yatra, family members left the house, leaving Ghazi alone. Upon their return, they discovered him hanging. Police arrived shortly after to recover the body.

Ghazi’s wife expressed her anger towards the Election Commission regarding this tragic incident. A local resident told reporters that Ghazi had been under immense stress since the final voter list was published, worrying about his and his family’s future. The resident described the incident as unfortunate, noting that many others in the area are also listed under the same category. He urged the government to investigate the matter and provide support to the grieving family.

It has come to light that Ghazi and five other family members are also listed under the provisional category. Additionally, 111 other residents from booth number 141 are similarly affected by this judicial process.
