Shimla, August 26: In a press conference held on Wednesday, Jayaram Thakur, the Leader of the Opposition in Himachal Pradesh Assembly, expressed his views on various issues, including the conduct of Chief Minister Sukhu.
Thakur emphasized that the Chief Minister must understand the dignity of his position. He stated that Sukhu cannot undermine the respect associated with being a CM. Thakur criticized the current behavior of the CM, suggesting it diminishes the stature of the office. He reminded that no one is above the law, including the Chief Minister.
Thakur claimed that the current situation in the state favors only Congress officials, sidelining other officials. While providing jobs to the unemployed is essential, he noted that only Congress members seem to be receiving work. Merit is being overlooked in this process, which the CM is well aware of. Recently, the High Court questioned the basis for the agencies appointed by the CM, asking about the rejected candidates and suggesting an investigation into the matter.
He also pointed out that the CM had previously declared he would not sing “Vande Mataram” before the monsoon session of the Assembly. During the session, the national anthem was sung, and all members stood respectfully. The Opposition later requested all members to sing the national song. Thakur argued that the Opposition’s request was not inappropriate. He noted that similar situations occurred during the Independence Day celebrations, yet Congress members insisted they would not sing the national song. Thakur had previously raised objections regarding this issue, highlighting that not only two stanzas but the entire national song was omitted. He believes that the Opposition’s remarks in the Assembly were justified and accused Congress of trying to cover up their mistake by claiming that the BJP disrespected the national anthem.
Thakur stated that they have informed the Assembly Speaker that if any member of their party disrespected the national anthem, they would take action. He requested evidence, such as video footage, to substantiate the claims. However, no video evidence has been provided so far. Previously, Congress held protests in every district, accusing the BJP of disrespecting the national anthem. Thakur expressed concern over these allegations. He reviewed the video footage himself multiple times and confidently stated that all Opposition members sang the national anthem with respect. He asserted that no member engaged in any activity that could be deemed disrespectful.
The Leader of the Opposition criticized the CM for making false accusations against their legislators in front of the Assembly. He mentioned that Congress has protested against these allegations and that they have submitted a privilege motion against the CM to the Assembly Speaker. Thakur hopes the Speaker will act according to the rules. They are also considering legal action to determine if this case constitutes defamation and may approach the High Court regarding this matter.
