Tragic Incident: Newborn Dies Due to Hospital Negligence, Father Forced to Carry Body in Cardboard Box

Chaibasa, March 8: A deeply concerning case of alleged negligence has emerged from the Chakradharpur Sub-Divisional Hospital in West Chaibasa, Jharkhand. A poor father was compelled to transport the body of his newborn child in a cardboard box. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and sorrow in the region.

Ramkrishna Hembram, a resident of Bangrasai village in the KaraiKela police station area, admitted his wife, Rita Tiriya, to the hospital for delivery three days ago. On Saturday, Rita gave birth to a baby, but the newborn tragically died shortly after birth. Family members claim that the child’s life could have been saved had it not been for the hospital’s negligence.

According to relatives, after the newborn’s death, the hospital administration pressured the family to remove the body quickly rather than offering any assistance. When Ramkrishna requested an ambulance to take the body home, he was denied any support. Due to financial constraints and desperation, he ultimately had to place his child’s body in a cardboard box and set off for his village.

Upon learning of the incident, anger erupted in surrounding villages. Locals expressed that poor patients are often treated with neglect in government hospitals. They argued that if the hospital administration had the will, they could have arranged for the body to be transported home with dignity.

The villagers and the affected family have demanded a high-level investigation by the district administration and health department. They are also calling for strict action against the responsible health workers and officials, as well as compensation for the grieving family.

In response, Dr. Anshuman Sharma, the medical officer in charge of Chakradharpur Sub-Divisional Hospital, stated that the family did not request any assistance for transporting the body. He mentioned that had the family contacted the hospital administration, arrangements could have been made to transport the body via a Mamta vehicle.

He expressed his sorrow over the incident and urged patients and their families to communicate their issues to doctors during treatment to ensure timely assistance.
