Tragic Incident in Karnataka: Businessman Kills Family Before Taking His Own Life

Mysuru, June 10: In a shocking incident in Karnataka’s Mandya district, a textile businessman reportedly murdered his wife and son before committing suicide. The tragic events unfolded on Tuesday.

The deceased have been identified as 65-year-old Prabhakar, his 55-year-old wife Jyoti, and their 30-year-old son Santosh. According to police reports, Prabhakar allegedly strangled his wife with her sari before attacking his son, who had recently married about a month and a half ago.

Reports indicate that Santosh attempted to intervene but was also killed. It is suspected that Prabhakar later took his own life in his shop.

Santosh’s wife, Meghna, informed the police that she and her husband went to bed together on Monday night and were unaware of the impending tragedy. Authorities confirmed that she was not harmed.

Mysuru’s Superintendent of Police (SP) Shobha Rani Vijay stated that police received information about the incident around 6 AM on Tuesday and promptly arrived at the scene.

“We were informed that Prabhakar had killed his wife and son before committing suicide in his shop. We examined the crime scene and recovered a suicide note,” she said.

The suicide note reportedly detailed severe financial distress, including home loan EMIs and losses in business.

SP Shobha Rani Vijay further explained, “The note mentioned loans taken from L&T Finance and the pressure to repay them, as well as a decline in the textile business.”

When asked about the mention of the state government’s ‘Shakti’ free travel scheme for women in the note, SP Vijay clarified, “Prabhakar wrote that the bus services had negatively impacted his business.”

According to police sources, the suicide note specifically highlighted the ‘Shakti’ scheme, stating that it led customers to shop in Mysuru and Bengaluru instead, resulting in decreased local sales. Concerns about rising debts and pressure from finance companies were also expressed in the note.

Investigators revealed that Prabhakar had borrowed approximately 700,000 rupees from finance companies, in addition to informal loans. The family had previously downsized their textile business from a large store to a smaller one, primarily selling women’s clothing. The Mandya East police are currently investigating the case.
