Tragic Incident: Five Engineering Students Drown in Godavari River

Amaravati, March 21: A tragic incident occurred in Andhra Pradesh’s Polavaram district, where five engineering students drowned in the Godavari River. Authorities have recovered the bodies of three students, while search operations continue for the remaining two. This unfortunate event took place near Purushottam Patnam in the Atapaka mandal.

According to police reports, seven students from SRM Engineering College in Amaravati went for a swim in the river. They misjudged the depth of the water, leading to a sudden drowning incident. While five students were swept away, two managed to reach the riverbank safely.

Local residents initiated a search for the missing students using boats. Police and other officials joined the rescue efforts. The deceased have been identified as C. Shrikar, P. Abhiram, and Navdeep. Shrikar hailed from Bhadrachalam in Telangana, Abhiram from Vizianagaram, and Navdeep from Vuyyuru in Krishna district. The search continues for Goka Teja and Pasham Satish Kumar, residents of Vuyyuru and Madanapalle, respectively.

These students were in their second year of B.Tech at SRM College in Amaravati, visiting during the Ugadi holidays. After a trip to Bhadrachalam, they arrived at Purushottam Patnam.

Two of their peers, Chanduri Deepak and Gaddam Harshvardhan, successfully reached the riverbank.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed deep sorrow over this tragic event. He extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased. An official statement revealed that he spoke with officials regarding the incident to gather detailed information. Authorities confirmed that seven students had gone swimming in the Godavari River, with five reported missing.

The Chief Minister was informed that three of the missing students had died, while the search for Satish Kumar and Teja continues. He instructed officials to expedite the search for the remaining two students. Chief Minister Chandrababu assured the affected families that the government stands by them during this difficult time.
