New Delhi, March 21: The Indian government has taken significant action against online betting and gambling by blocking an additional 300 illegal websites and apps. This crackdown targets various platforms, including online sports betting, casinos, slot games, roulette, live dealer tables, and peer-to-peer (P2P) betting platforms.
According to government sources, the list also includes gambling networks and apps that offer real-money card and casino games.
With this recent move, the total number of blocked illegal betting and gambling websites has reached approximately 8,400. Of these, around 4,900 websites were blocked following the implementation of the Online Gaming Act.
On August 21, 2025, Parliament passed the Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Bill, aimed at protecting citizens from the risks associated with online money games and promoting safe gaming practices.
The legislation, which came into effect on October 1, 2025, imposes severe penalties for operating or promoting real-money games like poker, rummy, and fantasy sports, including up to three years in prison and hefty fines.
Additionally, the law established the Online Gaming Authority of India, which regulates the sector, promotes safe e-sports, and monitors betting-related games.
The government asserts that this measure is intended to protect individuals from addiction, financial loss, and social issues. Many online platforms lure people with false promises of quick money, leading to significant family losses.
This issue is recognized globally, with the World Health Organization (WHO) classifying gaming disorder as a condition where individuals lose control over their gaming habits, neglecting essential responsibilities despite facing negative consequences.
In India, the rise of online money games has depleted the savings of many families. Young individuals are increasingly falling into addiction, and in some cases, financial distress has led to tragic incidents, including suicides.
In response to these dangers, the government has enacted strict laws while also adopting a balanced approach. Rather than completely shutting down the online gaming industry, these laws promote safe and beneficial games.
E-sports and educational or social games are being encouraged, while harmful games like betting and gambling are being strictly regulated and separated from the rest.
