Surat, March 31: A devastating fire broke out in a residential building in the Limbayat area of Surat on Tuesday morning, resulting in the deaths of five family members. The victims included four women and a four-year-old boy, according to officials.
The incident was reported around 11 AM in the Meethi Khadi area, where a ground-plus-two-story house caught fire.
Initial reports suggest that the fire may have started while cooking on the ground floor, possibly due to a gas leak, and quickly spread throughout the premises.
Fire department teams arrived promptly to conduct rescue operations. Unfortunately, all five family members were found unconscious and were rushed to a government hospital in Surat, where doctors pronounced them dead.
The deceased have been identified as Shahnaz Begum Ansari (65), Husa Begum Ansari (18), Shabeena Ramzan Ansari (28), Parveen Abdul Kalam Ansari (19), and Subhan Ramzan Ansari (4).
According to police, the family operated a sari-making business from their home, which contained a large stock of saris, foam sheets, and other materials.
It is believed that these items, along with chemicals and oils used in their trade, contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.
Dense smoke quickly engulfed the house, leaving little chance for escape for those inside.
Inspector Chirag Dhokadia reported that the fire broke out around 11 AM, resulting in the tragic loss of five family members, including four women. He noted that the family was independently engaged in sari production, with a significant quantity of saris present at the scene.
A forensic science laboratory team has been called in to investigate the incident, and the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and officials are awaiting the medical reports.
Authorities have also indicated that initial investigations suggest the possibility of an electrical short circuit, which may have ignited highly flammable materials such as foam sheets used in sari packaging.
As the fire spread through the stored materials, toxic smoke generated in the enclosed space posed a risk of suffocation.
After considerable effort, firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control, with teams from nearby fire stations also responding to the scene.
A thorough investigation has been initiated to determine the precise cause of the incident.
