
Raigad, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : A tragic incident occurred on Thursday when eight students drowned at Dighi-Sagari Beach in Raigad, Maharashtra. The group, consisting of 48 individuals, was enjoying a school picnic when the accident happened.
The students were from the Winners Academy in the Alandi area of Pune, accompanied by six teachers. While playing in the water, eight of the students misjudged the depth and current, leading to their drowning.
Bhau Salunkhe, owner of Bhau Maruti Salunkhe Mahakali Water Sports, immediately initiated a rescue operation with his team. According to reports, they risked their own lives to recover the bodies of all eight victims from the sea.
Assistant Police Inspector Santosh Awati from the Borli Panchatan Police Station arrived at the scene shortly after the tragedy was reported. With the help of local residents, the police retrieved the bodies and sent them to the Borli Panchatan primary health center for post-mortem examinations.
The deceased students were identified as Tanmay Dattatreya Wahile, Sumit Bharat Ahire, Pranav Ramdas Bansode, Kavaly Satish Vasantkar, Rajveer Yuvraj Wahile, Yash Kiran Wankhede, Soham Tukaram Bhandwalkar, and Kaustubh Sandeep Dound. All were 16 years old and residents of Alandi in Pune.
Authorities have confirmed that an investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. This tragedy follows a similar event in Jharkhand, where three young children drowned in a pond while playing.
Local residents had attempted to rescue the children but were too late, as all three had already lost their lives.
