TMC Youth Leader Arrested for Assaulting BJP Worker in Kolkata

Kolkata, August 9: A youth leader from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a BJP worker and harassing his mother in the Bhawanipur area of South Kolkata.

The police acted swiftly, responding to the complaint within 24 hours. They are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The arrested TMC leader was presented in Alipore Court.

According to police reports, the accused is identified as Sandeep Shaw, who serves as the president of the youth TMC in Ward No. 73 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC).

The BJP worker filed a written complaint at the Bhawanipur police station last Thursday, claiming that Sandeep attacked him and severely beat him. He also alleged that Sandeep harassed his mother when she came to his rescue. Following the complaint, the Bhawanipur police registered an FIR and initiated an investigation.

The police apprehended the accused youth leader on Friday evening. They are looking into whether there were any other individuals involved and the motives behind the incident. A senior officer indicated that the police would seek custody of Sandeep for further questioning.

A senior officer from Kolkata police stated, “The youth leader was arrested following the complaint against him. An FIR has been registered under the relevant sections.”

It is noteworthy that the police have been proactive in taking action against anti-social elements, often targeting TMC leaders and councilors accused of breaking the law.

Across the state, several TMC councilors have been arrested under police operations. More than 12 TMC councilors have faced charges related to corruption, extortion, and harassment within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation area.
