Kolkata, July 1: The Kolkata High Court has granted interim bail to TMC leader Jay Prakash Majumdar. The hearing was conducted by Justice Ajay Kumar Mukherjee. The single bench provided bail under certain conditions. Majumdar is prohibited from leaving Kolkata and Bidhannagar. He is also barred from entering the Phoolbagan area, where his flat is located.
Notably, on June 3, police arrested Majumdar for allegedly occupying a residential flat illegally for nearly 14 years in Bidhannagar. The flat, numbered AE-337, belongs to Aarti Raychaudhuri. Reports indicate that Majumdar rented the property in 2012, but the rental agreement expired in 2015. The flat owner claims that no new agreement was made, nor was the original lease renewed, yet Majumdar continued to occupy the flat. An FIR was filed at the Bidhannagar North police station regarding this incident, prompting Majumdar to petition the Kolkata High Court for bail.
On Wednesday, police arrested Majumdar at a rented house in Salt Lake on charges of illegal occupation. He was living there with his wife. The landlord recently filed a complaint with the Bidhannagar (North) police station, alleging that Majumdar had not paid rent for a long time and threatened her by citing his political influence whenever she demanded payment.
According to the complaint, Majumdar moved into the house with his wife in 2014 at a nominal rent. However, he soon stopped paying rent altogether. The landlord claims that whenever she asked for rent or requested him to vacate the property, he threatened her with severe consequences.
It is reported that the house was originally in the name of the landlord’s husband. After his passing, ownership transferred to his wife.
