New Delhi, May 29: As summer heat intensifies, many rush to turn on their air conditioners upon returning home. However, it often takes time for the room to cool down, leading some to believe their AC might be malfunctioning. In reality, several scientific factors contribute to this delay. Warm air trapped inside, heat from walls, a closed environment, and poor airflow can all hinder the cooling process. By using the AC correctly and paying attention to a few basic room conditions, cooling efficiency can be significantly improved.

Experts explain that the temperature inside a room is influenced by the heat absorbed by walls, floors, furniture, and ceilings. When exposed to sunlight throughout the day, these surfaces retain heat. Consequently, when the AC is switched on, it must cool not just the air but also all these warm surfaces. This is why the AC initially works harder, resulting in a slower cooling effect.

Before turning on the AC, experts recommend running a ceiling fan for a few minutes and opening windows or doors briefly. This practice enhances air circulation. When the fan operates, trapped warm air circulates and begins to exit the room, slightly lowering the indoor temperature. The introduction of fresh air balances the hot and cold air, allowing the AC to work more efficiently and cool the room faster.

Cleaning the air filter also plays a crucial role in AC performance. The filter traps dust and small particles from the air. However, with continuous use, it can become clogged. A dirty filter narrows the airflow, preventing cool air from reaching the room effectively. Therefore, it is essential to clean the filter every two weeks to maintain optimal airflow.

The outdoor unit of the AC should not be overlooked either. This unit expels heat from the room. If it is surrounded by dust, leaves, or debris, it can struggle to release warm air. This causes the AC compressor to operate under more pressure, increasing electricity consumption. Regular checks of the gas levels are also important, as low gas levels can hinder the AC’s cooling capacity.

Room settings directly impact cooling efficiency. Many people set their AC to 16 or 18 degrees Celsius for quick relief. However, scientists suggest that a temperature around 24 degrees Celsius is optimal. At this setting, the AC consumes less electricity while providing comfortable cooling for the body.
