Tilak Varma Undergoes Emergency Surgery, Doubtful for T20 World Cup 2026

Rajkot: Indian cricketer Tilak Varma, the left-handed explosive batsman, underwent an emergency surgery in Rajkot, raising doubts about his participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The sudden operation also puts his availability for the five-match T20 series against New Zealand at risk.

According to sources, Tilak Varma experienced severe abdominal pain on Wednesday morning after breakfast in Rajkot. He was immediately admitted to a hospital where scans revealed the need for urgent surgery. Following advice from the BCCI Centre of Excellence medical team in Bengaluru, Varma underwent a successful operation at a super-speciality hospital in Rajkot. His current condition is stable, and he is expected to be discharged by Friday.

A medical expert, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained that recovery from such emergency surgery typically takes up to a month. The exact duration depends on the extent of tissue damage. The surgery involved a highly innervated area that can twist and cut off blood supply, causing intense pain and necessitating immediate intervention.

Following the operation, there is uncertainty about Tilak Varma’s participation in the T20 World Cup, which begins on 7 February 2026. India’s opening match is scheduled against the USA on the same day. His chances of playing in the New Zealand series next month appear slim, and confirmation about his World Cup availability may only come in a week or two.

No replacement player has yet been named for the New Zealand series in case Varma is ruled out.

If Tilak Varma misses the World Cup, it would be a significant setback for the Indian team. Known for his reliability, Varma played a crucial role in India’s Asia Cup triumph, scoring an unbeaten 69 off 53 balls under pressure against Pakistan after early wickets fell. In his 40 T20 matches, he has amassed 1,183 runs, including 2 centuries and 6 half-centuries.
